History and origin of Kashi Vishwanath temple | Ancient temple of Varanasi | How to visit Kashi Vishwanath Dham ?
- The kashi Vishwanath temple is an ancient, and one of the most famous Hindu temples. Approximately 3000 visitors, visit the temple every day. On special occasions, the number of visitors increased in millions.It is located in Vishwanath Gali of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh in India.This Hindu temple is dedicated to lord Shiva and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingams or jyotirlingams, the holiest of Shiva temples. Shri Vishwanath and Vishweshwara, is the main deity, is the Lord of the Universe, Ishvara means lord, one who has dominion.
- This temple is demolished by many Mughal rulars,many times in 1194 CE by Mohammad Ghori, in 1505 – 1515 CE by Sikandar Lodi and 1669 CE – by Aurangzeb.
- The current structure of temple was built by the Maratha ruler, Ahilya Bai Holkar in the year 1780.The temple is ancient and also mentioned in the Puranas.
- The temple complex consists of a series of small shrines in Vishwanatha gali, near the river.The Linga of the main deity at the shrine is 60 cm tall and 90 cm in circumference.There are also small temples for Kala Bhawan, Kartikey, Vishnu, Ganesha, Shani, Shiva and Parvati in the complex.
Recently on 13th December 2021, the grand shri kashi Vishwanath Dham was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Kasha vishwanath dham is approximately 900 – crore projects. It has a 400 meter long and 75 – meter wide corridor that will connect the main kasha vishwanth temple with three main ghats of Ganga.
The aim of kasha vishwanath temple corridor project is to feciliate pilgrims. It will ensure easy movement of pilgrims, devoters and tourists between the ghats and the temple. Now they had not to pass through congested streets to reach the temple.
The first phase of the project has been built at a cost of approximately Rs. 339 crore. It covers an area of about 5 lakh square feet. Over 300 properties have been acquired to implement the grand 40 ancient temples were found and restored without changing their original structure during this project.
Cultural events at Kashi Vishwanath temple
The main event is Rangabhari EKadashi, that is colors. It is assumed that before Holi, baba Vishwanath comes back to Kashi. The temple complex is echoed by the sound of dozens of damroos. (It is also known as Phalgun Shukla Ekadasi).
Baba’s marriage ceremony is performed at the residence of Kulpati Tiwari.
Mangala aarti – 3:00 a.m.
Bhog aarti – 12:00 p.m.
Saptarishi aarti – 7:30 P.m.
Shringal aarti – 11:00 p.m.
How to reach Kashi Vishwanath temple ?
By air – you can visit very easily by air as there is direct daily fight runs between Varanasi and New Delhi.
By train – Varanasi city is well connected in terms of railway facility. Trains from all metros and majaor cities across the country are available for Varanasi.
Varanasi cantt. Railway station enquiry number is 135. New Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai has direct rails connection.
